The Manhattan (The Uptown)

I can’t think of a more perfect expression of artistry in a glass than a Manhattan. When made properly the balance of sweet vermouth, whiskey and bitters is well almost spiritual. In fact its God’s gift to mere mortals. I’m convinced that Jesus didn’t serve wine at the last supper. Homeboy served Manhattans.

As a cocktail, Manhattan’s are best made with Rye Whiskey. Although its hard to argue against using a quality Bourbon. Here’s my favorite recipe. Although it’s a Manhattan, I should really call this an Uptown. Why you ask the use of Luxardo Cherry syrup makes it darker and well uptown is Harlem and Spanish Harlem, you get it.

Manhattan (the Uptown)

2 oz. Bourbon (My preferences are Eagle Rare, Maker’s Mark or Hudson Baby Bourbon Whiskey)

1 oz. Campano Antica Sweet Vermouth (No negotiation, well maybe Punt e Mes will do)

Luxardo Cherries (two for the glass and ½ teaspoon of syrup for the shaker)

Peyschaud’s Bitters (Angostura is the typical, but yeah why be typical) add at least two no more than five dashes. Using the bitters can change the profile of the cocktail.

Directions

Add two Luxardo cherries to a Martini Glass drip a little of the cherry syrup in the glass

Add the other ingredients to a cocktail shaker and shake until you feel the shaker get cold, trust me you’ll know.

Pour into the glass and Enjoy.
